Hula Anyone: A Santa Barbara Legacy Returns to Hawai'i

The Santa Barbara-based nonprofit Hula Anyone is currently raising funds to send a multi-generational group of dancers to a prestigious cultural festival in Kauaʻi. Founded six decades ago by Kumu Hula Angelita Eller, the school teaches hula as a sacred oral tradition and a form of storytelling rather than a mere performance. This upcoming trip allows the delegation to honor Queen Emma Kaleleonālani while returning to the indigenous roots of the dance. Unlike competitive groups, this hālau focuses on inclusivity and the spiritual energy of the community, welcoming participants of all backgrounds and abilities. By traveling to Hawaiʻi, the dancers aim to bridge the mainland and the islands through shared history and philosophy. This mission underscores the school's dedication to preserving Hawaiian heritage through professional artistry and a unified spirit.
